Science Facts

Neurohealth Properties of Hericium erinaceus Mycelia Enriched with Erinacines

This review synthesizes evidence on lion's mane's neuroprotective mechanisms, focusing on its unique bioactive compounds — hericenones (from the fruiting body) and erinacines (from the mycelia). Erinacine A is the only compound confirmed to cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis in the central nervous system of rats, with evidence suggesting it promotes survival and regeneration of neurons relevant to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The review cites a landmark double-blind clinical trial in which oral administration of lion's mane fruiting body significantly improved cognitive scores in adults aged 50–80 with mild cognitive impairment — with scores declining again after supplementation stopped — establishing this as one of the few mushrooms with direct human cognitive evidence.

Potential Antidepressant Effects of Scutellaria baicalensis, Hericium erinaceus and Rhodiola rosea

This pharmacological review examines Hericium erinaceus as a natural candidate for combating anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline. The bioactive compounds in lion's mane work through multiple complementary pathways: rescuing disruptions in monoamine and GABA neurotransmission, stimulating neurogenesis, boosting neurotrophic factors (NGF and BDNF), and counteracting oxidative stress and neuroinflammation — closely mirroring the mechanisms of conventional antidepressants but without the associated side effects. The authors describe its risk-benefit profile as favorable for use in mild-to-moderate mood disorders, noting potential applications particularly in stress-related cognitive decline and anxiety.

Ergogenic and Post-Exercise Recovery Effects of Cordyceps Supplementation in Humans — A Narrative Review

This up-to-date narrative review critically evaluates all available human evidence for Cordyceps as a performance and energy supplement. It documents the traditional use of Cordyceps species in Asian medicine for combating fatigue, enhancing physical and mental condition, and supporting adaptation to high-altitude hypoxia — effects attributed to its rich content of cordycepin, polysaccharides, and nucleoside compounds. While animal studies consistently show benefits for exercise capacity and ATP production, the review notes that human clinical trials remain limited and mixed, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions on ergogenic effects — an important caveat for any supplement containing this ingredient.

Current Advancements in Antitumor Properties and Mechanisms of Medicinal Components in Edible Mushrooms

This review covers the broad pharmacological profile of key edible mushrooms including maitake (Grifola frondosa) and shiitake (Lentinus edodes), among others. Maitake is documented for its diverse effects including immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and neuroprotective activities — primarily driven by its beta-glucan polysaccharides. Shiitake's bioactive lentinan polysaccharide is described as one of the most studied mushroom immunomodulators. Both mushrooms are noted for their long history of medicinal use in Asia and their emerging role in supporting the body against chronic stress and inflammation, with mechanisms including cytokine regulation and macrophage activation.

Modulation of T Regulatory and Dendritic Cell Phenotypes Following Ingestion of Lentinula edodes (Shiitake) AHCC and Azithromycin in Healthy Individuals

This randomized controlled trial in 40 healthy male volunteers tested AHCC — a standardized extract of shiitake mycelia — for its immunomodulatory effects, particularly its ability to counteract immune disruption from antibiotic use. Shiitake AHCC supplementation was found to modulate T regulatory cell and dendritic cell phenotypes toward anti-inflammatory responses, supporting immune homeostasis after antibiotic exposure. The study provides direct human evidence that shiitake's active compounds can meaningfully shift immune cell activity, which underpins the stress-resilience and immune support claims associated with this mushroom.
